Tour n° 6: Pitti Palace

Itinerary

Pitti Palace

The last and most sumptuous Medici residence houses unique collections of paintings and precious artistic artefacts.

Built in the mid-15th century at the behest of the wealthy Florentine merchant Luca Pitti, it was purchased by the wife of Grand Duke Cosimo I dei Medici, Eleonora da Toledo, in 1549. Since then, the palace became a place of representation for the Medici family, the Hapsburg Lorraine family, and finally the Savoy family, when Florence was the capital of Italy.

On the main floor of the palace, in the rooms that were once the residence of the Grand Dukes, is the Palatina Gallery, which, with its masterpieces by Titian, Raphael, Perugino, Caravaggio, Fra’ Bartolomeo, Andrea del Sarto, Rubens, Van Dyke, Murillo… is a must for lovers of painting.

The palace overlooks the splendid Boboli Gardens, an extraordinary example of an Italian garden, an area of more than 40 hectares dotted with sculptures, grottoes, fountains and plants of extraordinary charm, a veritable Eden in the heart of the city.
