Tour n° 5: Accademia Gallery

Itinerary

Academy Gallery

Few sculptures in the world can tell at the same time an intense page of history and the mastery and genius of an artist, like Michelangelo’s David!

The statue that immediately won the hearts of the Florentines, a much-loved symbol of the Republic of Florence, has been jealously guarded at the Accademia Gallery since the second half of the 19th century.

The museum, built at the behest of Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo of Lorraine with the aim of offering the students of the adjacent Accademia the best examples of Florentine art, fundamental for their education, has become Michelangelo’s museum as it houses not only the David but also the beautiful Prigioni, unfinished statues destined for the tomb of Pope Julius II della Rovere, the Pietà da Palestrina and the San Matteo.

Complementing Michelangelo’s masterpieces are a series of works from important workshops active in Florence between the 15th and 16th centuries.
